What is tooth contouring?
A procedure that improves the shape and balance of a tooth by gently reshaping its surface — without bonding anything on or using orthodontic appliances.
What dentistry usually calls ‘reduction’ means grinding the tooth down to seat a restoration over it. Tooth contouring instead preserves the tooth itself, refining only the surface so the natural structure is kept as far as possible. It is minimal enough to need no anaesthesia, and is most often completed the same day.
How is it done?
A specialised polishing instrument gently refines the tooth surface. Because the work stays within the enamel (the outermost layer of the tooth), there is almost no discomfort even without anaesthesia, and you can return to your day immediately. In most cases it is completed in a single visit.

- Is anaesthesia really unnecessary?
- Yes. Because contouring refines only the surface within the enamel (the outermost layer of the tooth), there is almost no stimulation to the nerve, so it is usually done without anaesthesia. There is little to no discomfort during the procedure.
- Will it feel sensitive or hurt afterwards?
- Since the work stays within the enamel, sensitivity or pain is rare. You may occasionally feel brief sensitivity, but it usually fades quickly, and you can resume daily life right after the procedure.
- Is it finished in one visit?
- In most cases it is completed the same day in a single visit. Depending on the scope of improvement and the condition of the teeth, minor adjustment may be needed — we'll advise you at the consultation.
- Can I still have veneers after contouring?
- Yes. Because contouring preserves as much of the tooth structure as possible, it can lead naturally into restorative treatment such as Su-veneer later if needed.
